RBC’S Need

Reflecting on recent events of racial injustice and social unrest, RBC recognized an opportunity to work on strengthening the culture of diversity and inclusion within their own organization. It was important for them to create an open environment where all RBC colleagues could feel included, empowered, and valued. To achieve this, RBC needed to cultivate an inclusion mindset shift for all employees at all levels company-wide.

Project Overview

RBC is one of the largest financial institutions in North America with one of the best credit ratings in the world. They provide personal and commercial banking, wealth management, insurance, investor services, and capital markets products and services on a global basis.

As part of a renewed commitment to expanding its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts, RBC partnered with Talking Talent to provide learning experiences that would align with their core values in DEI so that they could help employees to

  • Speak up for inclusion and empower people to grow and achieve more
  • Seek out and respect different perspectives to challenge conventional approaches
  • Identify and act on opportunities and needs that client diversity brings
  • Practice empathy in a corporate environment

The Solutions

To address the need, Talking Talent delivered two tracks of workshops for RBC employees:

  1. Inclusive Leadership for Managers – focusing on providing practical behaviors and tools to inform, educate, and strengthen leaders’ mindset towards creating a more inclusive workplace.
  2. Mindful Inclusion (for non-managers) – designed to help employees better understand and uncover their own bias, facilitate courageous conversations, and be a co-creator in fostering an inclusive culture.

These workshops were over the course of two months, October – November 2020. More than 8000 employees completed the sessions.

Having an inclusive and diverse culture at RBC is essential. Our business is built on connections and relationships between people, teams and organizations – all of which are incredibly diverse. In order to strengthen our business and our culture, it is imperative that we continue to strive for an even more inclusive workplace.

The Outcomes

Through working with Talking Talent, RBC has been able to help its people to better understand and demonstrate inclusive work culture practices. Leaders are equipped with tools to foster diversity and inclusion and are seeing strong improvements in retention, engagement, and innovation. Teams are thriving as co-creators of inclusion and are being “action-oriented problem solvers” towards preventing exclusion.

Coachee Responses

Discussing our biases and types of such - made me less critical of myself and my way of thinking sometimes. Also taught me to be more open and understanding towards others around me.

Thought provoking, really opens your mind to subtle issues that really are the crux of broader social issues and impacting inclusive workplaces.

It led to deeper thoughts of what it means to be an inclusive leader.
